Somatic trauma treatment STA®

Trauma is an event that physically and psychologically overwhelms a person to the point that the body’s usual coping strategies cannot process it. An unprocessed traumatic experience can have a massive impact on a person’s quality of life and evolve into a generalised anxiety disorder. The STA® somatic trauma treatment can help patients develop resources and reduce traumatic stress.

The STA® somatic trauma treatment was developed by Irena Brehm after years of working with traumatised people. The treatment combines various trauma therapy methods according to Babette Rotschild and Peter Levine with transactional analysis, kinesiology, and acupressure. Insights from neurobiology are central to the STA® treatment. The focus is on the limbic system, which is responsible for the emotional assessment of an experience.

STA® helps patients develop resources and reduce traumatic stress. Clearly structured conversations and slow preparation pave the way for the actual trauma work, where the centre of the traumatic experience is localised. This process helps affected patients integrate the event and anchor it in their consciousness. The brain learns to no longer classify every similar situation as dangerous and to disassociate the original event from new experiences.
